Prof. Arlyn P. Macapinlac
Director, National Service Training Program (NSTP) Diliman
Professor Arlyn P. Macapinlac, the current director of the National Service Training Program Diliman (NSTP Diliman), has always believed in the vital role of the University of the Philippines (UP) Community in cultivating the spirit of volunteerism. She considers volunteerism as coherent with UP’s role as a public service university. For her, “kapag marinig mo pa lang ang UP, meron nang inaasahang tatak… kasi yung service ay nakakabit na sa ating Unibersidad, na kasama din sa paghubog sa isang UP student.”
Prof. Macapinlac finished her Master of Arts in Philosophy in UP Diliman (UPD) and Bachelor of Arts in Communication Arts in UP Los Baños (UPLB). She has been serving the university in various capacities in instruction, research, extension and administration. Her teaching career began in 1993 as an Instructor of Philosophy at UPLB. She was a member of the Ad Hoc Committee that instituted the BA Philosophy program in UPLB in 1997. In 2012, she transferred to UPD as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Philosophy, College of Social Sciences and Philosophy (CSSP). Since 2009, she has been an Affiliate Assistant Professor at the UP Open University.
She has been actively engaged in various extension activities of the university. While she was in UPLB, she was involved in biodiversity conservation projects, serving as resource person and co-organizer of seminar-workshops for selected elementary and high school teachers in Rizal, Laguna, Mindoro Occidental, Mindoro Oriental, Polillo Island, Samar and Cebu. In UPD, she was tapped as trainor for Etika in CHED Trainors’ Training for the Teaching of the General Education Core Courses. Currently, she is one of the radio hosts of “Tabi-tabi Folkloradyo” and “Sebisyong Tatak-UP” at DZUP 1602.
She has held various administrative posts in the university. She was the head of the Philosophy Division of UPLB for more than five years. In 2013, she was appointed Assistant College Secretary at the CSSP. In 2016, she became NSTP Coordinator of the College. In June 2017, she was designated as the NSTP Director of UPD.
Prof. Macapinlac’s passion for volunteerism was enkindled by her exposure to extension activities as a young faculty member of UPLB. One such avenue that enabled her to express her advocacy in reaching out to people was her membership in UPLB Formal Environmental Education Team (UPLB FEED Team). Her team did projects to train and monitor teachers in far-flung areas on communication strategies in teaching environmental education and environmental ethics.
It was the volunteerism aspect of the NSTP program that enticed Professor Macapinlac to accept the NSTP posts. She believes that Initiatives to help people need not be grand to be of value. Even a small act of kindness can make a big difference in someone’s life. She and her NSTP Diliman team aim to create synergy in stamping the “Tatak UP Diliman” in promoting service to the nation and people while complying with the NSTP Act.
